Hostage UK has been formed mainly
by people who have direct experience of kidnapping - either they have been
kidnapped themselves, are members of a family that has had a family member kidnapped,
or have some professional involvement with kidnapping. They are aware of the
problems both during and after the kidnap.
Hostage UK
has three core aims:
- The provision of specialist services for both the
family and the hostage, during and after the kidnap;
- Education for organisations sending employees to
kidnap hotspots to help them lower the risk, improve their response, and
highlight to them the needs of families;
- Advocacy and campaigning to influence public policy
and the policies and practices of organisations sending employees to
kidnap hotspots.
The
charity draws on an experienced board of trustees:
Terry Waite CBE, chair of trustees and former hostage negotiator and hostage;
Sandra Singer, Vice Chair, former Red Cross and ICRC, incl. hostage release
and family support
Carlo Laurenzi OBE, former director of Prisoners Abroad
Phil Bigley, brother of former hostage in Iraq
Sue Williams QPM, former head of the Met Police’s hostage unit, now a
specialist kidnap consultant
